I'm starting to think that < 1 % of people on elitetrader are actually profitable

The answer to this question has been carefully discussed by academia .... look to the work of Terrance Odean for enlightenment.

    Mobile RT charts

Calm down atticus, raging against every other poster is going to cost you in life expectancy. Most things that render ok on a PPC will render fantastically in the Safari browser in an i-phone anyway, so I don't know where you are coming from.

How do you explain difference between S&P index and SPY ?

I don't trade the SPY so I don't know the facts for sure, but I'd imagine that one issue would be expenses. The SPY deducts a management fee, the SPX does not. Also, do SPY and SPX close at the same time? If the SPY follows the futures, then we're talking 4:15pm EST.

    Mobile RT charts

I'm wondering if anyone can recommend a good service for getting real time quotes and charts on futures that displays well on an i-phone? quote.mobi is not bad, but it isn't real time and doesn't do all the futures.

    Managing Funds for a Living

If you could walk through year by year and see the death rate of systems in each period, that might be an insightful exercise.

    Managing Funds for a Living

Is there a way to look at aggregated results of all systems on Collective?

Al Gore's net worth jumped from $2m to $35m in 7 years

I'm sure he gets his jollies from besting Bill. Post Oval office he has an Oscar, a Nobel and $100mm to show for it, while Bill is still sweating it out on the stump with less money and diminishing fame. I'm willing to bet that those $175K speaking fees, impressive though they may be, did...

How's everyone doing in 2008 so far?

Generally speaking I would agree. Small is beautiful - which is also why comparing a return of 100% on a small balance versus a 20% return on a giant balance is apples vs oranges. For completeness, there would however be a special class of trades that you can do between $10mm to say $50mm...

Buffett cites unfunded public pension obligations

From 2007 BRK annual shareholder letter: "Whatever pension-cost surprises are in store for shareholders down the road, these jolts will be surpassed many times over by those experienced by taxpayers. Public pension promises are huge and, in many cases, funding is woefully inadequate...

IB - Interest slashed in 1/2 since Sept.

When t bills are 2.5%, everyone else is earning 2.5% on their balances and you're getting 4% on your balances .... ... you might think everyone else is a fool, but you would be sadly mistaken. Just ask all those folks who were long mortgage backed commercial paper for that *extra* 50bps...

    Jefferson Co., Alabama in trouble

Alabama County's Debt Cut to Junk on Credit Squeeze (Update2) By Martin Z. Braun Feb. 29 (Bloomberg) -- Jefferson County, Alabama's $3.2 billion of sewer bonds were cut to junk status after the county said it may be unable to pay banks holding its floating-rate debt or make collateral...

    Bankruptcy of Vallejo CA

I think quite a few of these municipalities are dragging along sizable pensionable obligations in the closet. You've got a lot of half pay checks to write out if people retire at 50 but live to 75.

    Bankruptcy of Vallejo CA

Vallejo is on the brink of a dubious distinction - becoming the first city in California to declare bankruptcy. The fiscal crisis, which comes more than three years after the state took over the city's debt-ridden public schools, is a result of snowballing police and firefighter salaries and...

The Implications Of Schindler and VN

Anyone who has spent some time investigating how the returns to merger arbitrage and factor model driven arbitrage have degraded over time will acknowledge how competition affects the margins on trading strategies just as it affects the margins on anything from a can of peanuts to your...

About the 95% statistics. Just a question

This is a subject Terrance Odean at Berkeley has looked into with comprehensive Taiwanese data. http://faculty.haas.berkeley.edu/odean/papers/Day%20Traders/Day%20Trade%20040330.pdf

About the 95% statistics. Just a question

The perennial problem of retail trading houses. If most customers made money, their accounts would grow over time and there would be no need for marketing. However, customers tend to lose money and a house that didn't aggressively market to get new accounts would see it's total assets...

About the 95% statistics. Just a question

Lindq's reasoning on the ecosystem of trading is IMHO spot on. However I would respectfully submit that high quality statistics on the subject do exist. By high quality I mean they are free from the usual naive biases and have been carefully thought through. These are not of US traders...

    Mixed 2007 For John W. Henry's Funds

Mixed 2007 For John W. Henry's Funds January 29, 2008 The year-to-date numbers are in for John W. Henry & Co. and the results range from pretty to pretty ugly. First, the bad news: The firm’s International Foreign Currency Exchange program lost an estimated 30.89% through December...
