Housing starts plunge 14.3% to 10-year low

Exactly - even a leveling out in housing prices (rather than a more probable decline) should lead to decreases in consumer spending. I also think that perception is important here as well - consumers likely spend more money when they feel wealthier, even if they do not actually increase...

This was my first thought as well when I read his post. :)

Housing Threatened by Defaults in Sub-Prime Mortgage Market

    I'm suprised that there hasn't been any discussion on this thread yet re: the warning today from HSBC, bad-debt charges significantly higher than expected due to sub-prime mortgage portfolio. http://www.marketwatch.com/News/Story/Story.aspx?guid={8FE57E15-3548-4816-BA2F-2DC8B57DFE2F}

Housing Threatened by Defaults in Sub-Prime Mortgage Market

Very good advice, and something that I feel similarily about. I'm nearly done with being a university student, so I owe a bit more than I would otherwise prefer (still quite small relative to most other students), but I personally believe very much in the "if you can't pay for it cash don't...

Chavez takes over Venezuelan energy sector

This is a very stupid move on the part of Venezuela. A quick bit of online research finds that their country has approx. the same amount of oil sands reserves as Alberta (Canada), but lacks the capital investment and technology to effectively exploit them. If Chavez was smart he would be...

Apple IPhone - Would you buy it?

There are two key problems with the iPhone for me right now - price point, and lack thus far of an announced Canadian cell provider for this phone. Aside from that, I've watched the Macworld Expo keynote, and the design is absolutely beautiful and elegant. I also think that everyone is...

US Economy is moderating, but Dow has new record high everyday, why?

The energy argument is interesting, media still seems to be fixated on the concept of rising oil prices. For example, I watched CNN's "In the Money" this weekend (not the best show, but I sometimes catch it), and they interviewed an energy analyst. The analyst predicted that oil prices will...

    Discussion regarding virtualization

Disclaimer: There are a number of threads on this particular sub-forum regarding browsing security, spyware, etc., so hopefully the following isn't duplicated elsewhere. The above said, I've recently been experimenting a bit with virtualization, and thus far I am quite happy. More...

Day trading in Canada Vs US

I looked into this a fair bit as well, and my understanding is that PDT does not apply to most Canadian brokerages. IB is an exception, and I believe that is due to their method of clearing. Also, PDT rules are a regulatory thing in the US, not an exchange-specific issue.

try to find a good broker in Canada

I'm actually somewhat tempted to go work for a retail brokerage for a couple of years in order to get a better sense of how things operate from their end. That said, I personally suspect that the key profit areas for a brokerage are margin interest and commissions generated by sales of mutual...

Starts of new U.S. homes plunged 14.6% in October

Good points, I would like to add another large one - consumer spending. It would be interesting to obtain a sense of the proportion of consumer spending that is/was driven by debt, more specifically housing debt. Flat or decreasing housing prices means the end of consumers utilizing their...

Questrade: now charging for currency exchange

Their new commission rates are pretty nice though, $5/trade for 500 shares is pretty darn good for a Canadian brokerage... I'm personally just happy to finally start seeing commissions come down in Canada, after years of $30/trade being charged by all the major brokerages.

    Killer price for monitor

From what I have read, LCD prices will likely fall another 20-30% in 2007. This was attributed to competition between manufacturers, technology and volume of production.

QUESTION regarding CNBC or general financial tv ...

My guess would be that one tuner runs the primary real-time tuning, the other tuner cycles through channels for the PIP feature.

    Crooks Hijack Online Brokerage Accounts

Why not just keep a secondary, secure computer for private transactions. One could even stick it behind a second firewall to "hide" it from the rest of your network. Summary is that you use one computer for gaming, web surfing, stock charting, etc.; and another computer for secure transactions.

    Wealth of Nations worth reading?

I've actually been meaning to buy myself a copy of the book to read, but textbooks still take up the majority of my reading time. For those that are interested, you can actually download "Wealth of Nations" from Google Books (since the old editions are public domain).

    Online Betting Companies' Shares Plunge

I just checked a couple of other Canadian companies after reading this: Chartwell (CWH) - $1.60 (down approx 25%) LVH - $0.11 - (down approx 29%)

    Empire of Debt

I posted a short review of the book on another forum. Worth reading, but focused too much on American politics for my own personal taste.
