zb close to bear market zone or there already?

It's a little out of date but the chart at http://zerohedge.blogspot.com/2009/05/guest-post-green-shoots-and-glimmers-of.html may give some perspective....

    Here is why ETFs suck

I do not think he was referring to you but rather to the article someone posted.....

    Here is why ETFs suck

Right and the original poster could have (hopefully did) made some good money in the ETF if he was long recently, even if not as much as he would have liked.... so he should not feel too bad.....

    Here is why ETFs suck

What I am saying is that the ETF (or anyone else) will get a lousy fill when they enter a massive roll order. (Of course they try to space it out etc.) The ETF owns a significant percentage of the long positions in the front month.

    Here is why ETFs suck

Options will still be subject to the contango and would not perform any better than the underlying on average. Short the ETF would be better. I do not see much benefit to the ETF, which from the point of view of futures traders is a huge lumbering long-only mark, forced to roll over a huge...

    Here is why ETFs suck

One reason is that the ETF's huge roll is of course gamed by those taking the other side of the trade.

    Here is why ETFs suck

The contango is the explanation for the behavior noted by the original poster, not the factors you mention (which are minor in comparison).

    Here is why ETFs suck

You'd have to find a way to buy at the spot price and hold and later sell at the later spot price. In other words, you'd have to store the oil. If anyone can find another way, their fortune is made because you could arbitrage against the futures contango. (I am working on coming up with a...

    Here is why ETFs suck

It is because the futures are in contango. This means that prices continually drop as the months move forward, unless they are overpowered by a strong upmove. You would see the same pattern if you are long futures.

    IB & NON-US Equity Options

Only for large companies. Small U.S. companies are restricted just like individuals. However it *might* be possible for individuals or companies to open an account directly with a foreign brokerage company abroad that had no connection with the U.S. and did not solicit U.S. accounts (if...

    IB & emerging mkt FX

Just because that's where there is (some limited) liquidity...forint versus euro...there is little or no activity in forint versus dollar......but you could build what you want with a pair of trades.....

    IB & emerging mkt FX

Many would say no. They are thin. Sometimes there are no trades. At one point the open interest in one contract was 3 and they were all mine! But there is enough liquidity for position trades in my opinion where there is the possibility of large gains on major moves. The...

You can trade the Hungarian Forint Futures on IB. I just took profits on 6 short contracts of EHFU9.

    IB & NON-US Equity Options

I believe it is an S.E.C. restriction. There are lots of things we cannot do because we are U.S. residents and are "protected" by the S.E.C. They only allow U.S. residents to trade a limited number of foreign securities, futures, options, warrants, etc. I guess one could incorporate a...

MARKET vs. LIMIT Order - Any Difference?

In futures, you used to be able to mark a limit order that could be filled immediately with the phrase "OR BETTER" to avoid anyone's thinking that a stop order might have been intended. I do not know if that can still be done...

That sucks any way to reach ib at night?

One can call IB 24 hours - just call the overseas numbers on the web site. Hong Kong office has always been helpful to me. They can handle U.S. accounts just fine.

Any good book on Statistical Arbitrage?

Mathernatica seems to have it also. Mathematica home edition now costs only $295.

Anybody else short US 30 Bond

Gold is up $10. The Fed may be buying Treasuries indirectly somehow.

Anybody else short US 30 Bond

Could that mean we are at or near a medium-turn bottom?
