A good area to place a stop is where it makes technical sense. A bad reason to move it is to eliminate the fear of a loss in a trade. A pro trader learns to not fear losses or at least render the fear insignificant.

Discretionary does not improvisational. You need a plan to trade. Your entries need to be defined as well as your exits. Know where you get out if the trade fails, either with a hard stop (recommended) or adherence to your rules and when to get out when it succeeds either by a target, series of...

If you are starting out, John Murphy's Technical Analysis of the FInancial Markets is a good primer. Anything by Richard Wycoff and of course the classic Edwards and Magee on Technical Alalysis. You can also get good ideas and understanding from Victor "Trader Vic" Sperandeo.
