    Crude Oil

Well, today Crude Oil finally followed the equity markets upwards. Strong Move. My guess is that five up days in a row in the S&P 500 might have convinced some traders that the damage done in the equity markets might be somewhat overdone. And that is a bit at odds considering the continued...

How can this oil hedge fund giant lose so much when October was an easy short trade?

Did you initiate a fresh short on the downturn ?

How can this oil hedge fund giant lose so much when October was an easy short trade?

    1. Uncertainty. Take the run up in CL that the poster proclaimed was an “easy short”. From July until the first of October CL F19 ran from $46 up to $76 and change. Let’s say you took a short the second or third week in October - it was by no means apparent at that point that the market was...

How can this oil hedge fund giant lose so much when October was an easy short trade?

Experience looking at charts in no way shape or form should be remotely compared to trading live. All charts look obvious. I couldn’t begin to venture a guess as to how many newbies I’ve seen over the years who were great with charts but made horrible traders. Risking real money changes...

There are problems associated with using oscillators - MACD included. Especially in isolation.

New Study Confirms That Carbs Make You Fat

Sams Club now has 24 size packs of cage free hormone free eggs. I’ve also been using the house brand Pesto as a universal condiment - it’s delicious on everything from eggs to meat and has only 4 grams of Carb in a quarter cup. I also get the fresh baby French green beans, broccoli florets and...

Investors for trading with PJM and ERCOT ISO

No, they probably won't be able to wrap their heads around the possibility of 1,000 percent vol in the INC/DEC markets during Summer peak hours. There is nothing on planet earth more volatile than power. Low Natural Gas prices have driven down wholesale electricity prices the past few years...

    Emini S&P 500 expectations.

While the Daily Chart has indeed come off it's highs - it is too soon to say that the long term trend is down. We will have more work to do on the downside in order to break down some very long standing technical support. Using 240 minute charts does not offer the resolution to back up your...

    Calculating Leverage on Futures Contracts

That’s all that matters. It would be disengenuous of me to tell you that your emotional state (that is, your own personal risk tolerance) is not authentic. Every client I take on is quite unique in this regard. Before a client goes live, I will typically have a conversation with him along...

    Calculating Leverage on Futures Contracts

I find that risk tolerance and leverage are still very individualistic, emotional topics for traders. Pain thresholds and tolerance are not uniform - especially for self-funded independent traders.

Fundamental news that affects the price of crude oil and natural gas

Since California forced out hydrocarbon-intensive industries decades ago - this auction has absolutely no bearing on Nat Gas or Crude Oil fundamental news.

Is paper trading a waste of time or does it yield benefits?

I give feedback to my clients’ paper trades - so in our particular circumstance it is a most valuable learning tool. We are also tracking performance metrics. YMMV. It is what you make of it.

How can this oil hedge fund giant lose so much when October was an easy short trade?

That is a loaded question - any answer I give will be exempted, overarching and refuted. I can’t honestly tell you what the desks at Citadel or DRW are returning at present. Tom Arnold at Enron and later at Centaurus is a good indicator of what was achievable in Natural Gas Intra Commodity...

How can this oil hedge fund giant lose so much when October was an easy short trade?

It depends on the spread. Firms (and independents) can have on many spread trades at once, and the possible combinations are huge. Since you’re in equities maybe look at CME vs ICE, UPS vs FedEx, MGM vs LVS, NextEra vs Duke... stuff like that. Build some models - adjust your hedge ratios for...

How can this oil hedge fund giant lose so much when October was an easy short trade?

Ummm, I’d respectfully push back about alpha. A spread trade between two or more highly correlated instruments is about as close as you can get to pure portable alpha to my knowledge.
