Grim future for day trading as a career

Of course not, but for ONCE, let's do it right and enact the PROPER legislation that will not hurt others. Instead of a tax, let's make a law that will require EXCHANGES to either throttle trades or impose cancel order fees for HFT per the definition....i.e. 50 trades per minute or 100 orders...

Grim future for day trading as a career

This talk of taxes on HFT trades is so lame. All the exchanges need to do is start charging for "excessive" cancels. That will curtail HFT significantly. But here we go again with the definitions: what is excessive ?

You can just rent a co-located server housed near one of the exchanges. That pretty much eliminates their speed advantage over your workstation.

Grim future for day trading as a career

I don't. Why ? As with most laws, they eventually end up hurting everyone....to the benefit of the few. Among my concerns: 1) How to determine exactly what frequency is deemed "high" ? 2) How to determine what type(s) of trading are deemed to be "harmful" ? See, these politicians come up with...

Grim future for day trading as a career

Of course.....as creating algo's requires a lot of skills....big data, statistics, SQL, coding, testing, etc. Most quant firms have a bevy of PhD's on their staff to do this stuff. It's not easy.

That's strange.....why doesn't the bank purchase the strategies ? After all, they've been tested for over a year.

That would include many outstanding hedge fund managers who achieve 10 out of 12 months of profitable trading....with only two 30 day periods of unprofitability. So that 10 day rule is not very reasonable IMHO.

Thanks for that Xela....very interesting. re: "Achieve an Average Net P&L greater than $0 for each product traded (evaluated at the end of the 10th trading day)" That is the only rule for the 10 day period that could be difficult to meet. Many systems can easily go into drawdown mode for 10...

    Would you trade this system

Why not just purchase some historic data and backtest this system with a couple dozen pairs ? This is much faster than live trading....which might take YEARS before you can make any conclusions.

    Would you trade this system

I've backtested a lot of break-out systems and they usually show 60%+ winners. The only problem is: you usually get in with a buy or sell STOP order....so the problem is getting filled at a reasonable price when the instrument makes the break-out.

    Useful Statistics for Discretionary Trading?

My bad...I didn't read the "fine print". Ten days is definitely fair. So if you are below $50k after 10 days, then you need to ante-up another $100 ? If so, that's definitely fair.

Yeah but what about the rule where you cannot go below $50,000 ? That means given the initial amount of $50,000, you are "out" if your first day results in a loss. Great rule. I wonder what % of the newbies are snagged by that one ?
