Thanks for the advice. I will cool it with the name calling. I'm biased by a grandfather telling me stories of fighting the Germans in WWII, and telling me how the French army had a way of showing up after the battle was over and taking credit for the victory. When I explained to him what's...

I believe that's the strategy. Merkel will implement the FTT on a limited basis in the EU/EZ and then begin a Teutonic bullying campaign to get other countries to join in. The French will play their usual role as cowardly collaborators. Once Merkel gets a core group of countries on board, she'll...

This raises a new question... Does this mean that all EU countries that agree to the new treaty are agreeing to accept the FTT? Have Sweden, Luxembourg and Malta thrown in the towel?

If I understand the laws correctly, an official EZ FTT requires unanimous consent of all EZ countries. Both Luxembourg and Malta have adamantly said they will vote against any FTT unless it's global. Cypress, Slovenia, Ireland the Netherlands (could go either way) and the newly-elected...

The Dutch government sends mixed messages about the FTT. A few months ago the Finance Minister, Jan Kees de Jager, made several very strong statements against the FTT. Then he completely changed his position and said that the Netherlands "wouldn't block it." Then, at ECOFIN, he seemed to change...

The FTT would burn London to the ground making Germany the de facto ruler of Europe. Of course, the French are the perfect collaborators. "Hitler never abandoned the cloak of legality. He recognized the enormous psychological value of having the law on his side. Instead, he turned the law...

Luxembourg changed their bank secrecy rules after 9/11 as did many countries. But I don't see them being willing to sit back and do nothing while 30% of their financial sector relocates. Same with Malta. The financial sector is the largest part of both countries' economies. If Germany/France...

I don't think Malta or Luxembourg will fall easily. The FTT would be financial suicide for them. A significant part of their financial sectors will pack their bags and move to Switzerland or the UK.

Perhaps the best thing that could happen is a small group of EU/EZ countries institutes the FTT and it fails miserably.

Anders Borg has been steadfast thoughout the FTT debate. I'm sure a lot of pressure has been applied to get him to change his position, but he's never wavered for even one moment. He deserves a medal.

Can someone explain how the EU can impose the FTT on EZ-17 members Malta and Luxembourg, both of whom have stated clearly that they will only participate in the FTT if it's global. Malta and Luxembourg would see a significant part of their financial markets relocate to Switzerland and/or the...

The short-term looks good right now. It's the longer-term I'm concerned about. An election or two from now the composition of the house/senate could swing in the other direction. Keep in mind that the unions have made the FTT the centerpiece of their "economic justice" campaign. They can...

Barring a backdoor VAT or other bureaucratic trick, the EU-FTT is dead for now. The UK, Sweden, the Czech Republic, Malta and Luxembourg are united and unwavering in their opposition. These countries should force it to a vote and drive a stake though the FTT's heart. (There will probably be...

For the last two years they've been telling everyone this is a tax on financial institutions "to hold them accountable for the consequences of their greed." Now they're willing to admit that the FTT may, in fact, be a tax on everyone's pensions and savings. Whether it's 5% or 1% isn't the point...
