1/4% Tax on all stock trades pushed in NY Times today

After reading the "Impact Report," there has to be at least one person in either Germany or France smart enough to ask the question: Who bears the burden of the FTT? The banks? Or the 500,000 people without jobs as a result of the tax?

George Clooney's Leftist Movie Flops At Box Office

My wife and I saw Clooney's movie over the weekend with some friends who assured us that it was really great. It wasn't. The characters are interesting and there's some zippy dialog, but it runs out of story about half way through the movie. I was hoping for a "Michael Clayton" type drama...

A friend of mine in Sweden says the "I'm for the FTT if it's global" statement is a way for politicians to say they're for it, while really being against it. Here's the situation: In most EU countries, the FTT has 65% popular support. But at the same time, many politicians are smart enough...

    Reducing Size after Extreme Profitability

I learned it from a successful options trader back in the late 1990s. After a lot of testing, I started using it for all my trading. In theory there may be more "optimal" methods, but from a practical standpoint I've never found anything better.

    Reducing Size after Extreme Profitability

Backtesting shows this to be a very effective method in every market I've ever tested.

did steve jobs waste precious time pursuing quack remedies?

It would be nice if there were inexpensive, natural cures for cancer. Sweden, Cuba and numerous other countries have tested many "natural cancer therapies," but unfortunately they haven't worked. I often hear the argument that chemo and radiation are the first treatments against cancer...

I agree that there's a lot of uncertainty and it will be a while until we know how this plays out. A friend of mine who lives in Sweden says the Swedish government is still adamantly against the FTT. My friend sent me an interesting email this morning saying that the UK Labor Party coming...

The FTT will not be EU-wide and Malta has said that they won't participate because the EU can't impose taxes on them. I agree that Switzerland is attractive in many ways, but Malta is very inexpensive (relative to London and Zurich/Geneva) and their tax rates are extremely low (15% max on...

1/4% Tax on all stock trades pushed in NY Times today

Malta is against the FTT and is cutting income tax rates for companies that relocate there. London is extremely pricey and the Netherlands and Sweden have high taxes, so Malta could end up being the big winner from the FTT fallout. Over 12% of Malta's GDP is financial services, so they...

This is critically important. All ET members should call their representatives. When calling an elected representative's office, it's very important to be polite and professional. People who are calm, knowledgable and serious-minded have the best shot of being heard. The more calls they...

Without the UK this tax is a bust -- 70% of all the revenues would come from London. This isn't an EU tax. It's a tax on the UK.

Apply those numbers to New York... The finance/investment industry is 35% of Manhattan's $1.2 trillion economy. Let's use the EU report's estimates that equity trading volume will decrease by 20% and all derivatives by 90%. There are 300k people working in the industry in Manhattan. If...

Even though the FTT appears to be dead-in-the-water in Europe for now, it's not going away -- either here in the US or in the EU. It will rear it's ugly head in the US because it has the support (and massive campaign money) from all the major unions. I expect that every candidate running...

If you think that's scary, take a look at this. Barroso says that more power has to be concentrated in EU institutions because "national governments can't be trusted." There's no question that Barroso is hell-bent on destroying not only capitalism, but also democracy...

The article is so full of holes it's hard to know where to begin: 1. The author talks about the support the financial transactions tax (FTT) has in Europe from countries like Portugal, Spain and Belgium (countries with small financial markets and nothing to tax); yet neglects to mention that...

The Dutch have solidified their position. Both the Finance Ministry and Foreign Ministry are now saying "no FTT unless its global." I was concerned that the Netherlands might waver under pressure. Instead they've fortified their stance. Good for the Dutch. They won't be bullied.

It's good to know that if someone in Toronto does business with someone in Hong Kong the EU may not decide to tax it. What a relief!

Let's hope the UK, Sweden, the Netherlands and Malta hold their ground. Regarding G20 "partners": The US, the UK, Canada, Australia, Brazil, Japan and South Korea have all said "no" to the FTT. I don't know of any G20 country that's said yes. So it's a mystery who Barroso is talking about.
