The most excellent way to pick great stocks

I can't know why Ernie does what he does, but I have no problems with his attitude. It's really amazing however to see how many people take themselves so seriously that they just go up in flames when someone else makes fun of himself. (Besides posting content; where are your results? where do...

The most excellent way to pick great stocks

I didn't go to Wharton and I don't know his actual figures, so I can't give you the annual returns. However, since MrMarket is rather open about his trades, I can give the figures on a per position basis. In 2001, MrMarket opened 41 positions, average return ~ 7.5% The last 2001 positions...

The most excellent way to pick great stocks

Yup. I just love backtests. Wish I had a dataset like yours! First idea: just ignore the earnings forecasts for now, if they are not included. SP1500 might be a bit smallish though, I pick my stocks from the 8000+ Moneycentral universe. Still, I like the idea very much! Regards, Karel

I guess that's why they called it the World Wide Web and not the World Wide One Way Street :) Karel

The most excellent way to pick great stocks

Hi, I see your point too. :) I only think you're a bit severe, because he's not *just* in it for the fun, IMO. But to ask you a question: when you say he still has a way to go, what exactly do you have in mind? I think the universe definition is a good start, for one. Regards, Karel

He did. That's why I'm here. Despite the mindless flaming going on here (which undoubtedly is keeping people away). My clue on Ernie is that he is just bragging for the fun of it. Ignore it, brag back, do whatever you like, as long as you don't forget to be constructive, too. Regards, Karel

The most excellent way to pick great stocks

Well, I would be the first to admit that better results are possible. That they are easy to get is not so clear. Losing money is not a lot of fun, but beating the market is some compensation. Could you please share how the rest of you are 'coining' this market, or rather how you do it and how...

The most excellent way to pick great stocks

OK, trash that claim! Call it a point, even. But what are we talking about with over 200 stocks with a price over $5 making a new high in the last week? (Source: Moneycentral screener) BTW, Ernie is a bit more critical, so of these 200 only some 9 would have made his universe, according to my...

The most excellent way to pick great stocks

I just looked at my own results with the MrMarket method. Considering all my positions, open and closed, I currently stand at a 6.7% loss from exactly one year ago, when I started to follow MrMarket's picks. I also developed a clone of his method and used those results in my port too, so this is...

The most excellent way to pick great stocks

Underlined the parts I would like to comment on: 1. This was the actual claim that started the thread, as will be clear for anyone who clicks the link: "I have 53 consecutive profitable trades of 15% or higher since January 2001." So, MrMarket didn't say: "consecutive WINNERS", he said...

The most excellent way to pick great stocks

As long as the praise applies to me and not to the Fool, I don't see any problem. :) Karel

The most excellent way to pick great stocks

In 2001 MrMarket opened 41 positions. Some of those ran well into 2002, and the last 6 of those 41 were closed around the end of 2002. Those last 6 were all losers (average loss ~43%, my estimate). MrMarket closed the other 35 positions for a gain of 15% or better, but the 6 losers dragged down...
