How to Back Test the ES Emini

A few questions: 1) What granularity of data do you require? Is Daily adequate? 2) How much history do you require? 1 Month, 1 year, 10 years??? -- This may impact #1. 3) Do you know how to code in ThinkScript? 4) How complex and intricate is your backtest? -- If more than trivial, you are...

Stop Loss When Selling Put Options

IMO: Yes! You CAN implement a STOP LOSS on an option. However, you need to think thru what you want to happen, and what the practical limits may be. For example: you Sell a 30DTE Naked PUT on stock X, and next day, stock X drops 50 points, your buy back of your PUT will likely cost more than...

Relationship between implied volatilities of different timeframes

IMHO: I have not tried to analyze IV intraday, so may be missing something important. However, I think what you are observing should be expected behavior. Note: the diversion is mean reverting seeming to merely indicate the buying/selling pressure is not instantaneously uniform (you would not...

Relationship between implied volatilities of different timeframes

Not having any idea on the underlying, it could relate to some upcoming event. Else, volatility should be in contango, with slightly higher IV with greater time to expiration.

    Delisted stocks

Shay: You may have different needs, so this may not work for your purposes. My backtest's have a desired starting date, and a required ending date, for the period of the backtest. I do not currently require all specified securities to have data on the start date, but require at least one...

    Delisted stocks

Shay: I have been "pruning" stocks that do not have current data, which seems to provide the same function.

    How do you use ThinkBack?

For simple trading strategies (needing only daily closing prices), it is quick and easy. The PnL graph is handy. You may wish to take a peek at OnDemand in TOS, for more control and detail.

    IC adjustments

While not really an adjustment (pardon the slight diversion), OptionGuru's statement "...makes no sense to close that leg because it's so far OTM..." fails to consider a price reversal. A fairly common way to manage (not adjust) IC's is to close one leg once you have made some specified return...

    IC adjustments

Ah! For it to be successful, your ability to identify "how the underlying will trade" must be accurate and more valid than the general market as reflected in the premiums! I have not been able to demonstrate my ability to predict how an underlying will trade better than that of the general...

    IC adjustments

Surely you jest! They are structured (without adjustments) to bleed you out slowly, if given an ample sample size. -- Expectancy is slightly negative due to commissions and slippage (this is ignoring fat tails which is more negative).

    IC adjustments

I'm guessing by "IC", you are referring to Iron Condors? If so, please elaborate on the time frames you are focusing on? DTE of days, weeks, months, ...; Adjustments should be a function of your DTE, your commissions, your "rules", such as max loss, profit target, etc.

Simple trend determination? For Emini Future

The Dow Theory definition of Trend is yet another mechanism (basically higher highs & higher lows for an up-trend, etc). I coded this in ThinkScript, which seems to work fine, but alone, is of marginal value (as are the other detectors). -- You may wish to use more than one mechanism for more...

    Methodology of Volatility Trade

IMHO: "consistently profitable" does not exist. Consider metrics which more precisely characterize what "YOU" really are looking far, without over constraining your search. Expectancy, max drawdown, minimum annual average return or some quantifiable but reasonable set of metrics. The "low...

Options on index futures & ETF

I don't do Futures either, however, a better comparison would be against SPX options, instead of SPY options.

    Backtesting ideas?

IMO: Backtesting is a highly fragmented and severely porous field. First, one needs to ask themselves the honest and specific/detailed question: What exactly, do I need/want? IMHO: This question is a very difficult to derive, as each of us have very different goals/requirements.

When to get out of a failing option trade?

IMHO: I agree with stevegee58. Regarding:-> "... I'm hoping ..." hOpium is commonly used, but seldom is wise. I tried it with Linn Energy once and got castrated.

How do you know whether volatility will rise or fall in the future?

IMHO: rmorse is correct! However, some people consider volatility a mean reverting play. For example, when volatility is near it's yearly high, some would think odds are better that it will retract, rather than expand. My 8-ball keeps replying "Ask again later." and "Don't count on it."!

    put option question

It depends on what type of option you hold! If an American style option, answer is yes, if European style option, answer is no. However, The "exercise" of an option typically is not in your best interest. Consider selling the option instead of exercising, for a more profitable exit.

First Live Trade... What's my next move?

Good advice from lindq Apparently you are the sole owner of all contracts at that strike (1)! Looks like you bought one contract on 3/28th. You should not trade products with no liquidity. You should have a plan, so you can learn from your experience (when it appears to work, and when it...
