    Excel 2007

The non-responding mode is normal. I have a huge 35 MB workbook with no links... That takes about 45 minutes to re-calculate... And it goes in the tank like that at least half the time. For most applications... There is no progression at all between Excel 97/2000 and Excel 2007...

    Excel 2007 crashes with DDE

Agree with all the DDE complaints... it's 20 year old technology. Thanks for the RTD experiences... It's so typical of MSFT to foist slow bloatware on the world. I'm looking at Reuters APIs right now... They have a wide range of implementations... DDE, RTD, COM ActiveX, etc...

    Trading to meet daily targets

My target is 120,000 shares/day volume. I view every 6.5 hour day as a marathon... And push myself exactly as if it was a road race. Since I make a profit on 80-85% of trading days... It's all about maximizing volume for my firm. Because I have goals and take them very seriously... I...

How do you automatically download monthly statement from IB?

Why can't IB just have an option where they email you the Statement every day. If someone sees it... so what? But this will never happen... The Customer must be punished. Instead... I have to use the Platinum Security Device TWICE to get to statement... And then download... So I...

Did I get screwed by IB today ?

What does "work fine" mean? Sub-optimal can be "fine"... but less than optimal. By definition... In the long run... Any kind of Market Order pays 50% of bid/ask spread as a transaction cost... But actually more... Because routing algorithms will play games with your Blank Check. You...

    Trading to meet daily targets

I have volume targets. A trader MUST have targets... To keep working as hard as possible for 6.5 hours. People that quit early or whatever... are recreational traders. An actual business goes full steam during business hours.

    Excel 2007 crashes with DDE

I also run Excel 2000 on multiple boxes... For reasons above. Excel DDE issues are very tricky to resolve... Often resulting in workarounds as suggested above. Use the Windows Task Manager... (Hit Control/Alt/Delete keys)... And make sure you have only one instance of Excel running.

Morgan Stanley Traders Lost $390 Million in One Day in August

Exactly. Taking an initial hit in a crisis... Then making it all back and much more ** on the volatility **... Is fairly standard for Pro Traders.

    Data mining

I would venture... That you could replace "price data" with "snowflakes"... And come up with an equivalent number of "statistically meaningful patterns". IMO... As someone with a successful trading business for 15 years... Built entirely on quantitative analysis using proprietary...

Did I get screwed by IB today ?

The above is professional advice. Entering a Stop Loss order... Just says "I cannot trust my judgement to exit a position"... And for that failure... you are willing to pay a PENALTY every time. Personally... In 2007 so far... I have entered about 200,000 orders into IB SMART... And...

How long did it take you to master the markets?

The answer is trading every day for a full market cycle... Including a bull market and a bear market... And also including at least 3-4 liquidity crunches like we saw last summer. It takes about 10 years to experience this. After 2 years I had made a lot of money... Was overconfident...
  15. Q

    Data mining

What you are doing... is "data dredging"... Which, by definition, is statistically fallacious. Your mindset and the design of your analysis... inevitably leads to this. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Data_dredging

Do Hedge Fund Managers Misreport Returns? Evidence from the Pooled Distribution

Misrepresentation of offshore hedge fund returns is rampant. If Enron and Worldcom happen under SEC jurisdiction... Use your imagination about offshore fraud. 80% of the world's hedge funds are registered in the Cayman Islands. The resources of the Cayman Island authorities... Might be...

    Beware! Print out your statements

This is 2007, buddy... No one prints 100 page statements anymore... You just save it to disk as an HTML or WORD file. And, yes, IB make all kinds of "retroactive" adjustments... Like they OFTEN pay dividends late... And then pretend it was done on time by printing a "retroactive" payment...

Losing Execution Priority using IB TWS

And since people are reading this thread... I will give you a simple reason why I do not trust SMART. I do about 400-500 trades/day... And at least 10 times/day... For an order that is 100% fillable at NYSE the primary market... SMART peels off 100 shares and sends it to Island...
  19. Q

Losing Execution Priority using IB TWS

dst, with due respect... You use a ** glaring ** LOGICAL TRICK in your response. For INTERNAL purposes... IB must flag orders as NET long/short for Stock Loan compliance. BUT then you INFER... That ISLAND still requires this information to execute a trade... Without providing ANY...

Algorithmic Trading Gets Smarter After Quant Upset

The point is to avoid getting hurt in a liquidity crunch. Whether the SD of the event is 25 or 4.3 or 3.7... Is of absolutely no value. Mathematics and models will not help you much in extreme markets. In fact... Quantitative analysis is of relatively little value in extreme markets...
