    What does PF=1.075 tell us?

no, you weren't, or i wouldn't have quoted you. you quoted and replied to crash disputing his claim, gann replied to you confirming that dispute, then you replied to gann reiterating your point with the buy-and-hold analogy. i mean, come on, it's just one page back??? but, i don't think...

    Recommended API

it's only not necessary for someone who doesn't need nxcore. which in that case, they should be using iqfeed. i can assure you, people who are willing to pay 1k+ a month and pull every quote are going to be interested in more than 5% of ticks.

Real-Time Limit Order book allows for exploitive HFT algo's?

no, you're not a trader, and sure sometimes people outside an industry should comment. however, it should be informed and objective. that's not what you're doing. what you're doing is helping to brand hft as evil. this isn't your decision. you learned it on the tv, or the radio, or somewhere...

Real-Time Limit Order book allows for exploitive HFT algo's?

what the hell are you guys' talking about? to the op? if you can see a bid half a buck below current mkt... how exactly do you think that that is in anyway predictive? why are you assuming it's static? hint, it isn't necessarily so... so how would algos who would stupidly use book size so far...

    high frequency traders...

chris, i'm not sure what ib you worked for, but if they shared your views i can understand why they x'd their mm desk. anyway, there are some things you're unclear about. 1) the bulk of the volume on ANY exchange is primarily market making and its derived hedging _by definition_. who do you...

    What does PF=1.075 tell us?

he wasn't talking about buy and hold, he was talking about data samples of 5k trades or more. your example isn't comparable. anyway, i disagree with him as well. he's more than likely looking at a single product strategy based on his 20 year input. there are strategies employable on multiple...

    What does PF=1.075 tell us?

agreed... if you're looking for an all-in-one metric, there aren't any that aren't custom. having said that, although not really a metric, throwing up an equity curve probably comes closest to giving you a good one-shot for an overall picture.

How do you guys not kill your eyes?

don't pursue trading if you want pristine eyes. i've worked 12+ hr days since i can remember... my eyes look like the eyes of someone 20 years my senior. the veins you'll get from overworking them, they don't go away.

    What does PF=1.075 tell us?

true. but, if you have an interest in discoursing with other traders about metrics, then you should know them. more importantly, if you have an interest in schooling other traders on metrics, then you should definitely know them, or else you'll end up looking like an ass.

    What does PF=1.075 tell us?

no, you're the one who's confused... profit factor = profit/loss what you posted is expectancy.

    Automated Trading Needs

right, that was my point. syncing your apps to have seamless failover is tough. msg layer, connection monitors, client/server setups, security... all this will replace IT. EC2 doesn't make those things go away, and if you don't have those layers integrated into your framework, trust me when i...

    Automated Trading Needs

distributed computing at multiple locations, as you concluded, is the solution. i've never heard of anyone doing this on an EC2 cloud. typically this type of application is farmed out to a datacenter... colo/hosting shops rent out their own machines (assembling them to spec), or you send them...

Small sample of ARCA FAST data

yea that's funny, those second numbers you posted looked a lot like my i/o bound simulator, so thought i'd ask. thanks for the tip on sse2, i've never thought of using it for this type of problem scope, looks like a very nice fit. hopefully i can make some time to attempt something...

Small sample of ARCA FAST data

is this because you're IO bound here, or by 'flat' are you referring to the non-fast protocol?

    Are financial programmers under paid?

i don't think you can compare government job salaries as they are nowhere near free market rates. in fact there are entire industries devoted to arbing government spending inefficiencies. a case could also be made for anything heavily unionized. give me infinite money (government) and i'd gladly...

    Hiring a Programmer...

    1) depends... for a _good_ programmer: starts at $75/hr at the bottom end. 2) you can't be certain. if it's worth replicating, good rule of thumb is to assume it will be. re: keeping it secret... nda's/non-compete's are worthless at the indi level, and arguably even at the insti level...

    Hiring a Programmer...

only way i'd ever pay a programmer % of profits is if i was making him a partner... in effect becoming my slave. unless i have no idea what i'm doing, it makes zero sense otherwise. i'd think twice about hiring from a trader msg board as well...

Journey from investment bank to independent automated trader

if it were clear, there would be no discussion. you were obviously hounding the kid, i'm not the only one who noticed it. he pointed to a thread on stat-arb, which has everything to do with hft. it's obvious that's what he's doing, he's mentioned it more than a few times in this thread even...
