    IB Spread Trader help?

    Anyone familiar enough with IB SpreadTrader, to help me figure out how to use this thing? I'm trying to put in a strangle in June crude futures. 1. So, I type in 'CL' as underlying. 2. Futures Options Combo -> NYMEX (USD) 3. Select 'Strangle'. 4) Month '20100517' 5) I just pick call...

    NASDAQ will cancel all trades executed...

    Yea, I don't understand this. In other commodities/futures I trade, even 5%-10% away from the previous print would be enough reason to bust a trade. 60%?! That's useless. Except the stocks that traded at a penny.

    How did you get your trading capital?

    You're saving $10k a year... work another 5 years, and your growing salary + compounded interest should have you already up at 100k. This isn't a race. The market will still be there waiting for you in 10 years.

    use RAN to trade futures options?

    The vast majority of options on futures, especially all those offered through the CME, are traded electronically now. I really don't see a reason to use RAN to go to the pit. Only exception might be serial months for the softs, but considering the wider spread in all of those commodities...

    Newbie question on income by selling calls

    This is where your view is in trouble. If you really believe momentum is a key factor and further upside moves are more likely than a downside move... You shouldn't bother with options at all. Just trade the underlying, and if youre right, you'd still be a very successful man.

    Tuition paid: take the conversion

    FCM informed me this morning. I assume CME informed them. I don't really understand the procedure. I wish I had been informed shortly after settlement yesterday, so that I could've flattened my position yesterday.

    Tuition paid: take the conversion

    Learned something today, at substantial expense. I started off (weeks ago) short crude calls. As the future climbed, I covered the call by going long the future (turning it into a synthetic put). As the future climbed further, I wanted to lock in profits: I bought a put. (I could've also...

    Any charting tools that rotate 90%?

    That's what it seems like to me. When I look at a soaring price chart in the normal orientation, I can't get away from the feeling that a high price must "fall". It's that lizard brain interpretation of gravity/balance. But looking at a stream flowing down hill, I don't have the feeling...

    Any charting tools that rotate 90%?

    It seems to me looking at a stock price chart, where time is the X axis, can be intuitively misleading... because the lizard part of our brain starts seeing patterns that shouldn't exist. It's extremely tempting to start assuming physical forces: "falling" (as in gravity), "momentum". I...

    C++-style NinjaTraders or TradeStations

    You *did* say DLL. If your plan is to rely on retail level third party binaries, I think it's a foregone conclusion you're stuck with Windows. Alternatively, start from scratch with open source QuickFIX.

    C++-style NinjaTraders or TradeStations

    You don't have to work with C#, but you may as well get used to .NET. If you're married to C++, you are still able to program with C# while interfacing to Ninja. You can still real time debug as well.

    Bank of Mom and Dad Closed! What about 50K a year tuition?

    Now we're just speculating. But this is interesting, never heard of the home price/income ratio. By the way, article states the home price was $1.5mm.

    Bank of Mom and Dad Closed! What about 50K a year tuition?

    I live in California, and my total income tax payments (including state) ends up being ~36% a year. From his $550k, he was taking home $350k. I believe his mortgage was $800k, at 6% translates to ~$50k (tax deductible). He still has $300k, a year. If all he could save was $250k...

    Bank of Mom and Dad Closed! What about 50K a year tuition?

    I'm not sure if you read carefully, but the first example you quoted about summer camp is for a family with 3 disabled daughters... I can't find fault with them for financially struggling. On the other hand: "Mr. Johnson made up to $550,000 a year, including bonuses, before losing his job...

    A truly riskless system?

    Right, I agree with you. I'm just pointing out the error in OP's math.

    A truly riskless system?

    This is exactly why models of asset returns assume log-normality, rather than normality. Take your 100% EUR/USD gain. Ln(2) = 0.693. Take your 50% USD/EUR loss. Ln(0.5) = -0.693. Expected value: 0.

    Help Starting a Fund

    I'm certainly not the kind of hedge fund that WSJ talks about... at least not yet. ;) But I've been around the startup/venture capital industry all of my professional life, so I don't see any of these challenges as being insurmountable. If you go down the list of top service provider from...

    Help Starting a Fund

    Are you referring to accredited investors, as per Reg D? Yes, absolutely. Minimum investment level is $250k. Because I'm dealing with commodity futures am I also subject to further regulation by the CFTC/NFA. This also means I'm exempt from the Investment Advisers Act. The only...

    Help Starting a Fund

    No offense, but you really are misleading people. I assume you have the best of intentions, but your information is simply wrong. Aaron Schindler and I both contributed to a very long thread on this topic, here: http://www.elitetrader.com/vb/showthread.php?threadid=26648 I think my...

    iPhone tws - premarket charts?

    I just started getting back into my iPhone tws app. Really impressive, at first play. However, the charts seem to assume equity market hours. I'm interested in 24 hour charts for crude, but can only see from 9:30 am est to 4:00 pm. This is true in any timeframe. Anyone know how to...
