Gamma Scalping and Reverse Gamma Scalping

Selection bias, though.... anyone reporting back on ET is likely to have only suffered small losses. - Big losses, and they won't mention it. - Big wins, and they'd be too busy raising money to clue in potential competitors.

Flash Crash Started With A Single Trade

Until the next time someone tries to sell 75,000 ES contracts? Apparently Al-Qaeda doesn't need to hijack a plane, they just need a small firm with DMA access to the futures markets.

Flash Crash Started With A Single Trade

Uh, that represents approximately 3% of average daily volume in ES trades. (And on that particular day, probably far less than 3%.) If that's an "explanation" for the flash crash... I'm stocking up on toilet paper and bottled water.

Hedge fund consultant / 3PM references

Hi all, I keep hearing whispers about "bad" third-party marketers and hedge fund consultants. The ones who send you the phone book as their "contact list", charge you 10% of AUM, make false promises to investors, and then fight you for every penny of incentive fees. It's made me very...

Gamma Scalping and Reverse Gamma Scalping

I mean, this pretty much says it all. Your expected profits will be a function of realized volatility versus the implied volatility that you sold. If you're able to predict that with any sort of accuracy, I'd suggest you just sell VIX futures.

France's debt up by 56 billion euros in second quarter

Anyone familiar with the actual numbers... where are the optimistic projections by 2014 coming from? I saw Ireland is also projecting a 3% deficit by then. Is it due to growth in GDP, or budget cuts?

Time for a new hosting service

There's always some variant of backup, but backup of operating-system level files is usually not available (or at least not automated). In the case of this provider, I am relying on manual, weekly bare metal backup/restores between two different servers. (I also do key *data* backups to a...

    OVX futures?

Sweeeeet. http://www.cmegroup.com/trading/options-volatility-indexes.html Kind of interesting their crude VIX numbers are slightly different from OVX. Slightly different methodology. In any case, another interesting tool to have. Just gotta figure out how to use it without burning...

Time for a new hosting service

Well... I don't want to burn any bridges before I get my new setup going. If you send me a PM, I'll let you know privately.

Time for a new hosting service

These guys already blew up their routing a few weeks back, and took 72 hours to restore... and just received this email this morning: "We apologize greatly for this inconvenience, but this morning during a server commision we were assigned, we mistakenly consoled your server, booted it into a...

Advice on Staring a Hedge Fund

I really, really emphasized the risk aspect. To be perfectly honest, I exaggerated it. I forwarded them all articles on the Ebullio blow-up earlier this year, when they fell 96% in two months. They'd say things like "but you're really smart"... which is what parents (even in-laws) are...

Advice on Staring a Hedge Fund

lindq, Are we related!? Feel like we might have the same father. Best decision I've made in this business so far: turning down money from the in-laws. I haven't been at this long enough to deal with the harassing outside investor yet. Part of me wants to say... that'd be a good problem...

where can I get the official settle prices for the ice-us-softs?

Speaking of, do you know if following day limits are calculated from previous day synthetic price... Or last traded price? Usually not an issue, but CTZ has hit limits ... Three times? ... In the last week, and today looking volatile yet again.

Advice on Staring a Hedge Fund

I don't necessarily disagree with you... and I've heard your message numerous times from other people. In my case, I actually found it MUCH more difficult managing *family* money than investor money. I've found the "professional" investors tend to be realistic about risk/reward, and let me...

Advice on Staring a Hedge Fund

This position I can get behind: hedge fund is a serious business. But I emphasize again that it's perfectly possible to succeed in this industry without having an "i-banking" background. Everything can be learned and/or outsourced as needed. There's nothing magical here, and investors...

    expiration option behavior?

It's hard to imagine this being significantly trade-able for anyone short of Citadel, considering the ask/bid spreads involved (for just about anything that I can think of).

Advice on Staring a Hedge Fund

I'm not specifically encouraging the OP, since clearly he's *very* early in the process. But what you said about requiring I-banking or financial industry experience is nonsense, and provably false. I will say though, this is clearly a career. The skill-set required is far more than...

Advice on Staring a Hedge Fund

No offense intended, but that's a horrible post. I disagree on every point.

Advice on Staring a Hedge Fund

Do *not* call yourself a CTA unless you've already passed your series 3 and registered with the NFA. I believe there are legal consequences.

    Ideal Investment Fund Terms

I was at AR Hedge today, and heard an interesting concept I hadn't come across before. Apparently some funds are now setting multiple tranches. Investors can then choose the level of gate / liquidity they're looking for, but have to pay a differing level of fee to get it. I.e., if you...
