My experiences as a Hedge Fund Startup

This anonymous alias of yours sounds a little shady. Before I get excited about defending the "reputation" of this anonymous alias... Let me give the retirees out there some constructive advice: make sure your prospective manager is properly registered with the regulatory agencies. Here...

My experiences as a Hedge Fund Startup

Unless the manager was George Soros, what could possibly motivate an investor to agree to this? I think the vast majority of replies have been critical, but constructive. As far as jealousy, I launched my fund with $1.5mm in Feb of last year. I hope to cross the $5mm AUM mark next month.

My experiences as a Hedge Fund Startup

An unknown manager can't raise (substantial) funds on the basis of "experimental" discretionary strategies. The OP apparently lucked into a single investor who has a lot of money to throw around... great for him. Turning that into a business model is just not viable.

if China one day said, “Hey - we’re going to sell all your bonds,”

One of China's highest national priorities, since founding of the People's Republic in 1949, has been self-sufficiency in grains. So, this example sucks. Of course, this example also sucks because China would never say "hey, we're going to sell all your bonds". Sell them... for what in...

Options on Futures @ Tax Reporting

Options on futures and futures have identical tax treatment.

    This is mind blowing

You can get (almost) similar pictures from just about any first-tier city in China. You should see Shenzhen, which basically didn't exist 25 years ago.

SEASON 2, thursday TV WALLSTREET WARRIORS

Jessica's awesome, very respected. Even in this day and age where more and more trade is disappearing off the floor and onto the screen... she's the only pit broker I've worked with that repeatedly beats the screen (sometimes even the midpoint). She even takes the time to work the...

    Hedge Fund Returns for 2010

Only if you assume there's beta, no alpha. Most funds, that's probably the case. Medallion... Not even.

    Hedge Fund Returns for 2010

You need to educate yourself. RenTech is a legend, the hedge fund every quant-oriented fund prays they could come close to matching. Medallion has $10b aum, and haven't had a losing quarter in more than a decade. Only the ignorant or insane would preach to that outfit...

My experiences as a Hedge Fund Startup

Congratulations on the milestone... best of luck to you. That said... I don't like to pretend to be a know-it-all, but note what I said in my first post in this thread: "My take-away from your story is that you may have a strategy with alpha, but it needs time to mature. I'd suggest you...

SEASON 2, thursday TV WALLSTREET WARRIORS

I know, old thread... but I'm just getting caught up on the show now. Wait, is Jessica (the cotton broker) *the* Jessica from JCot Options Inc!? Wow. If so, she's the broker I use to execute with on the floor! She's actually pretty hot (considering age). Based on past interaction, I was...

    CTA Startup

Yes, it depends on amount of futures trading... I want to say 10% or more of assets in futures, then you must register accordingly. In my case, I avoid equities entirely. This means I can avoid registration with the SEC, investment company act, and RIA overhead.

My experiences as a Hedge Fund Startup

I know I'm reviving an old thread here... Im not clear whether the SEC has any exemptions in the equity world. In the futures world, the NFA/CFTC does offer exemptions. You can trade (and get paid) as a commodity advisor without full registration as long as the funds involved are small... I...

    Becoming established

If you don't have 50k in assets at launch, then don't worry about getting "established". You don't need to pass the series 3/7, establish a corporate entity, or talk to a prime broker. Just trade via IBs friends and family setup while you try to build a track record. The NFA has exemptions...

Portable high speed internet for trading

Sprint and Clear are kinda the same thing. My 4G/3G modem is accessing Clears 4g network when available, and falling back to Sprint 3G when not.

Portable high speed internet for trading

I also got clear recently. 4 MB/s isn't fast enough for you? That's faster than vast majority of DSL lines you realize.

anybody would like to collaborate on building an options backtest platform?

I question the value of this. Liquidity in individual strikes is very low, and there are few market participants at any time... Whenever you trade a strike in real life, the MM on the other side will definitely adjust their quoting to match. Best you can do is probably estimate IV and vol...

NinjaTrader with Trading Technolgies does not support Brent ICE futures contract.

Yes, the problem is definitely on the NT side. Supposedly TT has a different API for the ICE (other than TF) instruments, and Ninja never followed through on necessary implementation and conformance. Ray looked at this for me almost two years ago, and decided he couldn't find time to do the...

anybody plays options on futures? Bloombrg: how to download and organize data?

Mizhael, I'm not a BB user, but just asked some questions about it in a previous thread. I saw your earlier thread as well... can you fill me in on what you found? Can you find historical option data for futures contracts 2-3+ years back? Can you get to a chart that shows implied vol and...
