Boy that sounds familiar. There are indicators that paint red/green for the trend. I use one, it's just a fancy MA indicator but it helps my rookie eyes to spot the trend.

If spyware keeps coming back try shutting off system restore and then run a sweep. I use spysweeper, Microsoft's beta sweeper, and another obscure one I can't recall the name of right now.
