With the population rising at exponential levels that wouldn't surprise me. Although I favor sudden political instability and broken supply lines leading to widespread famine as the more likely means of population halving.

Wow... I can see this starting to play out. Put on top of it the fact that the world is running out of oil (debators say we could run out in as little as 75 years or as long as 1000 years) and this could end up being the hardest fall civilization has ever seen.
