I've only been into trading for a year and I've been hearing this sentiment uttered all year long. What the hell's it normally like? Because I can read every book ever written on this, but all I've known first hand so far is a wildly volatile mostly uptrending market.

Okay I'll look into Up/Down volume too. Any thoughts on how these two compare to using OBV? I'm just trying to figure out a way to make volume more meaningful, especially when you're looking at a trending chart but the volume amounts candle by candle aren't changing much.

I'd happily pay $250 a year for the rest of my natural life not to have to figure that out. Before I got into stocks, I just used TurboTax Plus because I usually get royalties income each year, and I find that annoying enough.
