Coal is a huge buy PCX KOL

There have been some interesting spread plays during the past two days. Big volume in the September 150/180 and September 140/190 bull call spreads. http://whatstrading.com/2008/07/08/patriot-coal-corporation-pcx-11521-1059/ Looks like you're not the only bullish one

    this completely sucks

This seems to be your bank's policy, not an SEC rule. Why couldn't you have accounts with another broker? There is no reason for that. The bank is probably worried about trading you might do in your personal account ahead of customer orders or otehr conflicts of interest. Keep in mind, I am...

    Hedging short puts with VIX?

With VIX futures or options? There's an article in the latest Futures Mag that discusses with VX futures. http://www.futuresmag.com/cms/futures/monthly%20issues/Issues/2008/07/Editorial/Options%20Strategy/OptionsStrategy

How to go from trading education to trading?

Do yourself a favor and go slow. Learn the fundamentals of one market and learn to find opportunities where the risk reward fits your personality. Charts are good, but most of the successful and consistently profitable traders I've met understand the fundamentals of their market. Good luck.

Question about option level 2 from a newbie

Open an account with another firm. After almost a year of actual experience, you should be able to trade spreads with most firms. Not sure why Etrade won't let you. Ask again and send them a letter saying you undersand the risks of spread trading and you're willing to assume those risks. Good...

Ways to trade oil with options?

    why is the VIX dropping?

VIX was created to track the implied volatility of the OEX--to give traders a real time look at implied volatility in the most popular index options contract at that time. It has since been modified to track expected volatility of SPX. It was never intended to be gauge of past or actual...

Anybody trading 100+ SPX options per order

SPY would definitely be better, but if the question is about 100 lots of SPX, you're now dealing with 1000 lots and its part of spreads, which doubles it at least, and then you have the fact that SPY settles American and SPX European.

    why is the VIX dropping?

It probably would, but not necessarily, because VIX doesn't track the actual volatility of the S&P 500. It tracks the expected volatility, which is based on option premiums. There are other factors that will influence expected volatility--like emotion. That's why big moves higher don't see the...

Anybody trading 100+ SPX options per order

TradeStation - give me the real picture

I've used TS for a few years without any problems. Have no idea what all the complaining is about, as I have never had any problems whatsover with them. I trade short term intraday with their platform and it does the trick just fine for me.

    why is the VIX dropping?

The statistical volatility of the S&P 500 over the past month is 20.9 percent. Over two months its only 14.3 percent. So, VIX is still well above actual volatility. Unless you think the market is going to continue to see big moves like yesterday, VIX should fall more because yesterday doesn't...

    TradeKing a bad idea?

TradeKing seems like a decent broker. Haven't used them personally, but I think they're along the lines of an OptionsHouse or a ChoiceTrade. A lot depends on what you're going to trade. Check out OptionsHouse home page and click on Flat Rate Commission and you can see a comparison of varoius...

Risk more than your profit goal during non-trending markets?

I think it's okay at times. it's just a matter of your percent of losses/winners and what market you're trading. Try it on paper and see how often you would get stopped out. I've seen some successful traders risk five times more than they stand to make and more because the odds are good and...
