It's probably because in the previous years, a person who looses a job contributed to his losing it and so he would feel ashamed about it. But nowadays that is no longer the case on most situations of a person losing his job. A person losses his job now because the company can no longer afford...

I agree with Tom. I think one's social status would not automatically make him rude or polite. I think a person's behavior and attitude boils down from his upbringing.
