The New Math: Quantitative hedge funds are pressing into new realms of science

There is. I wanted to know if YOU knew what they are when you stated that they will inevitably implode, with the inference that they will implode merely because they are quant funds. For the record, I don't know what they all are either, but I know a few of them. I'm hardly dismissing...

The New Math: Quantitative hedge funds are pressing into new realms of science

Which of "these other quant strategies" are you referring to? What about all of the other quantitative managers out there whose strategies have worked, are working, and will likely continue to work? You'll just dismiss them because one quant manager took too much leverage and blew up...

The New Math: Quantitative hedge funds are pressing into new realms of science

Very true. Maybe they can get the "Graham and Dodd" guys in their crosshairs at some point. But that wouldn't make for good copy...

The New Math: Quantitative hedge funds are pressing into new realms of science

I read the article. They are talking about statistical arbitrage, almost exclusively in equities, with one mention of the guy doing commodities. A smattering of equity market neutral (most of which are NOT quantitatively run) and pairs trading. These strategies are built almost exclusively on...

The New Math: Quantitative hedge funds are pressing into new realms of science

The era and efficacy of quantitative investing did not end in 2006. This is complete balderdash. May I ask what type of quantitative strategies are you referring to that “went wrong”? List them please.

The New Math: Quantitative hedge funds are pressing into new realms of science

Exactly! And to the clown who said that quant investing began in in 80s and ended in 2006? Such untrammeled arrogance/ingnorance!

87% of all funds return less than S&P??????

Kapama: What kind of "funds" are you/the WSJ referring to? What were the parameters of the WSJ study? Why do you trust it? What are the benchmarks of the funds they studied? What time period did they use in their study? Which “S&P index fund” are you talking about?

    Global warming

Scientists who dare to suggest that "GW" may not be due to humans. Why? Because they (we) don't really know. And the majority aren't Americans, much less Republicans. Clearheaded, sober, to the point; these folks deserve medals...

    Nymex To List Softs

Good point FA...I imagine Globex wins in the long run. Trading CL (in the short term) is a dream now, but where to find liquidity for the nearby contracts could be interesting come January. I've not traded on ICE, so don't know how it "feels". As mentioned, the outcome should be interesting...

Another hedge fund on the brink

I'm not sure it was specifically inflationary hedging, rather I believe that the first hedge funds were equity funds that could take both long and short positions, with the idea that picking stocks and being able to go long or short is easier than being long only and trying to time the market...

Let's get back to fundamentals: the USD real rate is very competitive versus other G-10s. In the long run (months), this is of the utmost importance...

Big Mac Index, why not just use a basket of currencies?

I'm just trying to understand the question. Perhaps I should've been more direct with my response, and phrased it better, i.e. Yes, of course some form of relative PPP is better than absolute PPP. Who looks at the absolute PPP? The hamburger index ("Big Mac") is purely and simply absolute...
