Van K. Tharp's Random Entry System

We all seemed to repeat that mantra. Ride the trend of your big winner to make up your losers. I have backtested several trend systems that have about 1.75:1 or 2:1 on the average win. But because the win % is so low 30-35%, it end up being net down. Then IF you account for slippage and...

    Best Portfolio Backtesting Software ???

WL is the BEST! By far. Great support through their online discussion board. Reasonably priced. Good for both beginners and very advanced users. And no, I'm not affliated with them. Just a user. Started out as beginner in WL but progressing..

anyone attend the wharton seminar in NY on starting a hedge fund?

Yep, there will be a fallout in the HF world soon. Especially all these microfunds with expensive staff to pay. It's like everyone has a hf now or wants to start one. There will be a cleansing in the industry... It will be bloody...

Van K. Tharp's Random Entry System

danielc1: I understand your pt about B and trend following. Yes, a few big winners make up for all your losses. But backtesting a very simple minded trend following system will results in NET negative gain because the 70% of the time you are wrong even with small stop losses it ADDS up. So...

Van K. Tharp's Random Entry System

hypo: Yeah, I know what you mean. I tried to have something with at least 50% win/loss ratio as well. Ideally 60-70%(which is hard). But if you read Trading As a Business, the author notes that most trend following system has only 30% right. Which is true. Because if you do a backtesting of...

Van K. Tharp's Random Entry System

daniel1c & hypo: I got a question for you guys. From reading Tharp's book and some crude backtesting, we know that most trend following system is probably only right 30+% of the time. Or something like that. So, if your average gain per win is LARGER than your average loss, that seems...

    quant Vs technical traders

Sle, at least, there's one point we agree on. I think the press likes to focus on quant HFs that blow like LTCM,etc. It makes for good stories for people to hear. But I would BET $ that NON-QUANTS as a WHOLE have lost many multiples of quants, just because there are more of them. Just look...

    quant Vs technical traders

Who told you andy lo is a clown?! If consulting for Goldman Sachs and other major Wall St firms for a hefty fees is a clown then Andy Lo is #1 clown. He's taken pretty seriously on the Street. His book Econometrics of Financial Markets is like the quant Bible. He's running a $300M quant...

    quant Vs technical traders

hypostomus: OK. Funnie. I get the point. I'm not bashing maxpi or anyone. It would be nice that people verify facts before they make blanket comments. Proper spelling would be nice too. etc. but whatever.

    quant Vs technical traders

First off, it's LTCM NOT LCRM or whatever. If you are going to put down LTCM at least get its spelling correct. hehe. I'm not for or against LTCM or quants or whatever. Just trying to correct a few things. You wrote, "BTW I know a guy that did regression analyses for LCRM and he says their...

    EGO CHALLENGE (26 Sept 2003)

AMT4SWA, I've been watching your trades on this forum. Why are you keeping on adding to losers? You are averaging down! And you keep moving your stops away every time you add. I don' t know how big your acct is, but if you keep doing this you'll blow up soon... just tryin' to help...

Looking to hire a few traders...

Well, if YOU READ the entire post, then you would see my caveat that every strategy has up and down cycles. So, you gotta win big during WIN years and learned your craft then on crappy years you would just make steady gains(not spectacular gains). That's the SAME problem quoting the super...

Looking to hire a few traders...

We all know trading is a tough business, hence the higher risk premium. Have you ever read Market Wizards series of books? There are many examples of traders with explemary records spanning decades. Like Soros, Druckenmiller, Eckhardt, Ed Seykota, Richard Dennis(though he did blow up of...

Looking to hire a few traders...

I think what you are saying is pretty fair. Past performance is not a guaranteed of future performance. Look at any major funds, even respectable ones, like Janus or LTCM etc. Up and down cycles are part of the business. Being able to recover is the true trademark. Anyhow, when you say "I...

IB TWS hogging up CPU anyone?

I have Matrox too! And that's for my 2 monitors. Then I just added a THIRD monitor and that's where my TWS sits. I think that's where the problem lies. That video card is a PCI since I only have 1 AGP port. Perhaps that's where hte problem is?!

IB TWS hogging up CPU anyone?

Well, I finally got a hold of IB tech spport. Apparently, the problem they said is multi-monitors(???). So, if I move the TWS window to the the primary monitor then the CPU problem would go down, which it did. But then when I move the TWS back to the offending monitor the CPU usage remained...

IB TWS hogging up CPU anyone?

You guys noticed that TWS is hogging up your CPU or is it just my setup??? Basically, I've noticed over the last week, a process called javaw.exe is taking from 81-99% of my cpu! Making it impossible for me to trade quickly. I'm assuming that process is TWS related because when I shut that...
