If you put a HD on the same channel as the optical drive, you may need to change the cable to a higher density 80 conductor cable for the drive to work properly.

I don't see where reading a book is ever a bad thing. I would imagine that you could lose a lot more than 3k floundering about trying things and still not understand where things went bad. I guess I too have wasted a fair amount on books. I can say that none of them have made me any money...
