The good stuff is typically in the prop and exotic bets. You can get a strong edge when you find something but it doesn't scale past betting $500 at the few venues that have the lines you want. That's why the pro sports gamblers I know aren't retired already, nor can they take any outside money.
The Feds could fix this if they had the political will to do so. Just establish a single electronic market for each class of securities and abolish all the others. They would also have to ban internalization as well.

Wasn't there always a time and place advantage for exchange members? Now anyone can post a two way market if they've got the infrastructure to do it. Participants are still buying access, but it's going to computers and data feeds instead of exchange memberships.
I use them as a financing tool in my IRA but I wouldn't say I trade them. Not much volume in the long-dates ones, especially in the deeps that I want in single names.
Also, if you want uber cheap, a desk without drawers is also known as a table, and can be picked up at the Salvation Army for $50 and requires no assembly.

I went the other route from cheap. I have a 3 piece glass and steel set (2 desks or L config, bookshelf) that was $800 on sale, but it's beautiful and still looks brand new...
IB TWS does this. You click on the offer to buy or the bid to sell and it starts an order ticket based on your default settings. If it's right, you just hit transmit after that.
