    programmable backtesting software

Tradestation will allow you to program your own stoploss rules based on any definable criteria. You just need to test for your moving average crossover each bar, then if your condition is true, reset your stoploss accordingly.

Is anyone familiar with John Carter?

I've read his book Mastering the Trade, which came out at the end of 2005. At first I wasn't very impressed, skimmed it, then put it aside. Recently, I came back to it, and found that he does seem to have some straightforward, logical ideas, which seem worthy of further research.

    Strategy performance monitoring

If your strategies are coded in TradeStation, look into Rina Systems. It is expensive, but well worth the money imo.

Someone tell me about the realities of intraday trading

I concur with schoops on the slippage. I never really had a problem with YM or ES, although I don't trade the ER2 or EMD so can't really comment on slippage for those markets.

Someone tell me about the realities of intraday trading

Corso - I trade stocks and futures. The slippage refers to stocks. I generally find little to no slippage in futures. Thunderous

Someone tell me about the realities of intraday trading

Corso - I run automated systems on TradeStation. Assuming you are talking about entering via market orders and taking your stops at the market, I think you are better off by taking longer term daytrades, i.e., those with larger profit expectation. I use a volume filter on each bar to make sure...

    question to all mechanical traders

Emprise - I have used Excel for some backtesting purposes, but found it quite cumbersome, and the input of raw data can be quite time consuming. TradeStation is probably your best bet. TS's database is not perfect, but it's probably good for 99.8% of what you're looking to accomplish. It...

    TA of Equities Intraday.

B - Good luck to you, first of all. I suspect you need a plan. Your own plan. You say you do not like scalping. That should point you in a direction of longer term trading. That should take care of the problem of commissions eating up any profits you may enjoy. You seem to be...

    Unattended Automated Trading

Norm, Good question. I have run my systems unattended, and in some cases during overseas travels. I have only done so after learning the weaknesses in my system - not the strategy itself, which has been very thoroughly backtested, but all links in the chain - electric power, internet...

    1% a day consistently: possible?

Stephen, Good thread. If you've backtested thoroughly, are comfortable with the historical drawdowns of your system, and find that your slippage/fills are within your expected tolerances, then yes, I think you can approach/achieve/exceed 250% per year. The limiting factors as I see them are...

    Tradestation

I've used them quite extensively as a brokerage for the last six months. The major benefit for me is the platform, backtesting, and automation. It is somewhat cumbersome to trade automated using another broker as you would need an interface like TradeBolt, etc. As far as customer service...
