Any true bond trader here? Or ex-bond trader?

    a) a lot of bond trading is against the banks. ie they sell out of inventory... or go to the market buy it and flip it to you at a spread. Is that the case? b) aside from IB who has a decent interface? is there anything like a think or swim for options?

    Any Natural Gas ETF?

I am quite familiar with HND - it is a quite good proxy for the CME and ICE natgas contracts... Toronto is physically closer to Chicago than NY (kind in the middile)- it trades closer to the actual...

Anyone have experience of RTS (Realtime Trading Systems) software?

Evaluated them a while ago. Very strong backtesting platform Strong for development Grew out of the Eurex - german company Tango is fairly powerful - I think they also have some kind of C++ api as well. Run their own network and platform (similar to TTNET) Expensive

sun java on Ubuntu with IB TWS

I use the 32 bit version with Oracle Java - no problems reported I've used both the downloaded java and from the 3rd party repo. Actually I think the repo just points to a shell script to download and install.... Also all the plugins work fine - links to python and R... Cheers Cheers

FX Options - where and how

Its true that most is OTC - but all the big banks also have started to use CME to hedge their positions plus EBS, RD3K. I would stick to CME futures and Options for retail - they also have the eMini contract if you want to reduce postion and or risk.

Trading from a laptop + multi monitors

A bunch of the traders use the matrox device(s) here. We tested the usb devices and didn't go there. Again - least problem will be using 2 huge displays and screen splitting software. Second is the Matrox

Disable the onboard one and use 2 nvidia's. Ubuntu works much nicer with nvidia drivers :-) I also use it - along with vmware for the odd windows app.

Trading from a laptop + multi monitors

Something like the ASUS UL20FT has HDMI and VGA out. you could run 2 x 24" screens off it for a total of 3 screens. http://www.liliputing.com/2010/07/asus-ul20ft-thin-and-light-netbook-to-ship-in-august.html Only slightly more expensive than a netbook. Some of the AMD netbooks...
