I average in both shorts and longs as needed. Seems like the key is to start with a postion small enough so averaging can work.

Magna is right, most depends on what is used to generate your signal. I find that the EMA works better for the short term MA and the SMA for the trend. Problem with MA crossovers is you will get whipsaw a lot on choppy days, so you need to find a confirmation signal before taking trade on...

Arca is good for shorting, can place order on a downtick and the software will automatically place it .01 higher than best bid.
Supoose only takes 100 sh at .01 up, will take rest at your limit price or better after bid tiks up.

Seems if all positions are net long or net short, margin is not a good idea because of event risk. A mix of long and short will help you sleep at nite, but does lower overall returns.
White, exactly time value. You need to go one strike ITM to get corresponding movement with price. This only applys to short term options. Longer term more time value(premium) so less movement. Look up mavericks threads, lot of good stuff there.
I have realtime option quotes and also used the delayed quotes from CBOE( larger file size, more mos.) CBOE quotes are accurate.
