Alibaba IPO is a big failure just as FB

Just to clarify, it made an extra 38% for the existing shareholders of the company, AT the expense of the company for the portion of shares it sold. So for what was raised at $68, that was at the expense of Ali Baba's balance sheet, for the benefit of the inner circle of buyers at $68.

Best way to incorporate starter fund

Also just re-read the original post. You mention this is friends and family. Not sure of the legal requirements of your home jurisdiction, but that probably dominates. I am sure IB friends and family could work for you. Also it enables you to run the accounts as seperately managed accounts...

Best way to incorporate starter fund

This is wrong. First off, http://www.sec.gov/news/press/2011/2011-133.htm For many years, advisers to private funds have been able to avoid registering with the Commission because of an exemption that applies to advisers with fewer than 15 clients – an exemption that counted each fund as a...

    Unusual Way to raise money

If you charge to manage money explicitly, you must set up an RIA (only need to be state registered, not SEC with nil assets) and you'll need series 65 or a CFA. If you are paying to borrow money to do whatever you like with, I guess that does fall out of regulatory purview. But double check...

Need a portfolio math geniuses help.

If you assume realized vol = historic vol, then 68% of the time the return on the asset will be +- that #. So if hist vol of bonds is 12% annualized, your expected ret will be between -12% and 12% (assuming no carry). If those bonds earned 4% a year, your expected return will be -8% to 16%...

    Finding Work after Quitting Daytrading

agree. i'm saying it might help attract investors. low cost, pretty high payoff from marketing point of view. Also catches him up on financial planning related knowledge he might be missing.

    Finding Work after Quitting Daytrading

I don't understand why you don't explore the RIA route a little bit more ? You are experienced, have a finance degree, so are only a few steps away from doing some mean-variance portfolio optimization for clients, and probably have a market view you could roll into client communications...

Dude buys 150k Jan TWTR calls

This looks like panic buying. I also think it's impossible that somebody 'know's something' since this type of trading is not under the radar by any means -- too sloppy and easily investigatible (and confiscatible). Guy might as well call the SEC directly and ask for some handcuffs in advance...
