This underlying point of this thread is as false as saying intraday traders are competing with long term investors.

I prefer managing my trades manually rather than using an automatic trailing stop. For example, if I scalp out half my position at 1 point anduring let the rest run, I am going to be managing that last half manually. I don't think trailing stops are at all beneficial to me.

You need to get out of your head that these HFT firms are trying to compete with you. These computers aren't trading on the same time frame as humans. They are using extremely powerful processors and are capable of analyzing market data down to extremely small time frames, like microseconds...
