I'm a programmer and I have experience in designing trading applications. Not trading systems, but trading platforms. I also have experience in designing large enterprice applications.
And I'm thinking of starting a Collective2-like project.
I have about 50% code done and I have experience...
1) It seems tradestrong is right. 100k is more realistic figure.
2) Yes, you have to use open-source libraries. If you try to create such platform from scratch, it may take forever. And its very hard to estimate the budget.
3) Rather than building your system on your scripting language...
If you want to code something complex then you should hire a programmer. If your system is simple then you should do it yourself in one of the major traing platforms. It will take some time to learn but you will be able to change/improve your system yourself.

I think elitetrader admin could create a forum for this. Or a section similar to "Software" where programmers could advertise themselves.
It definitely makes sense to create your own trading platform (or to find open-source one) if you want to make custom changes to the way it works. At the moment I'm trying to do the same thing. But it seems Perl is not the most suitable technology for this purpose. Is there any other code...

We are thinking about adding FIX protocol support to your existing project. We are looking for free demo FIX data source. A lot of companies provide free demo accounts, but only through teir custom API. I was not able to find demo FIX data source. Any ideas?
