No, not the same. Only the US and Eritrea have citizenship based taxation whereas the rest of the world practices residency based taxation. Huge difference! Celebrities will be double taxed or forced to renounce citizenship.

Because of citizenship based taxaation, as a US citizen you are liable to submit a tax return wherever you live until you renounce your citizenship or die. You may also have to pay to a country you don‘t even live - how F-in stupid is that?

Up until 2010 - basically NOBODY abroad filed a tax return and it was not enforced by the IRS. FATCA forced the foreign banks share data and in turn with FBAR (the real culprit) forced compliance upon 9 million expats or face huge fines. It really sucks and is totally unfair. The only other...
