Best Country for Trading (Tax efficiency)

I'm not sure it's Belize's (or the destination country's) laws that control here, but...I think it Canada's laws would be more pertinent; after all, you're making the case to the CRA that you are no longer a Canadian tax resident. So the Q is less 'how does Belize define residency?', and more...

Best Country for Trading (Tax efficiency)

I'm a Canadian citizen going to graduate school in the US on an F visa beginning January 2021 (ignore COVID-related issues for now) while continuing to trade. Here's my tax strategy...anyone see anything I'm missing? I will ultimately consult with an attorney but want to do my research first...

Robinhood suicide story -- unclear on Margin issues

Let me put a finer point on it and use hard numbers, because I think the crux of what I'm trying to get to the bottom of is this: are brokerages required by law to monitor (and have risk controls to prevent) real-time assignment liability, even when a spread -- at the time it's opened -- would...

Robinhood suicide story -- unclear on Margin issues

(In the part of the poster's reply, he hadn't yet mentioned it being a spread with a Long 25 Put position, which is why I wrote that, but as you've already identified, there were other problems with that reply...) ^^ I agree with both of these replies, of course, except in the case -- and...

Robinhood suicide story -- unclear on Margin issues

I think you're confusing premiums received with margin required to put on the short position. Yes, if you sell 200 Puts for $0.50 each, you'll take in $10,000 in premiums. But that has nothing to do with the margin required for that kind of a position. There's absolutely no way a $16K account...

Robinhood suicide story -- unclear on Margin issues

Right -- as I wrote in the OP, RH's past goofs in this regard are well-documented and it wouldn't surprise me to learn that they screwed up some other margin / risk-control setting. But so far, there's no evidence that that's what happened in this case. The only explanation offered centers on...

Robinhood suicide story -- unclear on Margin issues

Exactly. Your previous reply suggested that I was perhaps missing the rather elementary premise that your long Put hedges your short Put, so -- a the time you put on the trade -- your risk is limited to the difference between the two Strikes (x # of contracts). Yes, that's credit spread 101...

Robinhood suicide story -- unclear on Margin issues

Yeah, my hope is not to go too far down the rabbit hole as to whether RH bears any culpability for his death -- the two threads linked to in the OP have plenty of that chatter -- but rather focus on the quantitative margin issues, and whether positions of the type/magnitude Forbes hypothesized...

Robinhood suicide story -- unclear on Margin issues

Something I still don't understand re: the Robinhood suicide story (threads elsewhere on ET: 1, 2) that perhaps an options-specific forum might be able to explain. The narrative at this point is that the kid misinterpreted the negative $730K cash balance he saw as a debt he owed, when in...
