Prop means "Proprietary". Usually, you are trading with the firm's money, where if you had a retail account you'd be trading with yours.

Most direct access brokers I've seen have a larger opening account balance than that. FWIW, I trade a ~$1200 Scottrade account currently. I'm just an amateur, trying to learn how to trade without losing a ton of money at the same time. Once I'm consistently profitable and ready to go...
