Perhaps he is trading a retirement account and cannot short. The government, in all its typical wisdom, has decided it is too risky to use retirement funds to borrow against for margin. So the solution is to use even more risky choices such as options and futures.

Thanks for the comment. Since the strategy involved Renko bars, it may be that the more chop with the ES showed up as more whipsaws. A larger brick size could solve this, but with more risk. I'll check it out with some backtesting.

Sorry- my bad. I am using 12-tick Renkos with the Ichimoku Cloud for trends. Reversals are 2:1, or 24 ticks. For trading ranges I am using the Lizard Trader Auction bars with 5 minute trading timeframe and 60-minute higher timeframe, along with Session Pivots. Thanks for the reply.

I have tried that, but it seems that automated systems will occasionally take bad trades, like selling near the bottom of a trading range. Maybe the successful trades will make up for these losses, but I think I can get fewer draw downs by manually selecting the trades, or at least turning off...

True. Actually, I tend to do better in sideways markets. In trends I get nervous about how much longer the move will last and I jump out too soon. Then I have trouble jumping back in. In trading ranges it is more clear to me where to enter, and in trading ranges you are SUPPOSED to get out...
