So, would my 80-to-1 vs 16.5-to-1 calculation be more apples-to-apples then? Trust me, I'm likewise trying to figure this out because I have a tiny MF account that's currently inaccessible, but I have a substantial account at IB that I'd like to feel comfortable keeping 100% there. Best.

The 33-to-1 MF ratio comes from dividing aggregate total assets ($45.93B) by total equity ($1.39B). If you do the same to IB the number appears to be a paultry 7-to-1 ($33.15B assets vs. $4.63B equity). As for the 80-to-1 ratio, this is a total guess, but it looks like they might be taking...

Attached is MF Global's most recent 10Q. It looks like the way their leverage was reported in the press was based simply on their total liabilities ($44.4B) and their total stockholder equity ($1.39B). If we compare apples to apples, would we do the same for IB, which has $28.0B in liabilities...

Autoliquidation isn't really relevant. That only applies to their client traders. MF's downfall wasn't due to their clients making massive unhedged bets. It was MF making those bad bets on their own accounts. I wouldn't be surprised if IB doesn't apply the same autoliquidate rules on their...

I'm sure they'll insist "no", but they also trade their own account. MF going down was a minor annoyance to me, as I had a tiny account with them. But, if IB went down, I'd be hosed.
