Why do people go long options with one day left to expiration? What is the advantage or strategy behind this?

I trade etf's or etf options like QQQQ's etc. for swing trades but I'm thinking about buying an index to hold on to for long term since the markets have tanked. For long term is there an advantage to buying an index mutual fund or is it just as good to buy etfs? Sorry if this has been answered...
